I decided to venture into Greenwich Village with my pochade box one early spring day. I saw this quintessential West Village spot with its unlikely lighting - sun just peeping over the tops of buildings, but blocked by the awning. It created a sliver of light, like on a stage on the bench. A dapper gentleman came over and sat for a few minutes. I was thrilled to have him there. He left (alas!), but then a few minutes later returned and enabled me to capture this urbane moment.
