Gowanus Canal Dredging
Oil on canvas
12” x 16”
$990
I started this painting on-site with my portable easel on the banks of the Gowanus Canal, just below the 9th Street Bridge. What a jumble of objects in the view! And the early summer sky had a purplish hue that afternoon. Very quickly it became too hot for me to venture out there again and I opted to make finishing touches back at my studio. It took quite a bit of tweaking of tones to make the dredging barges the focus of the painting. I usually try to avoid including glassy high-rises, but in this case they added interesting counterpoints in the background.
