This group exhibition is dedicated to en plein air painting by eight New York City artists. Plein air painting has been a popular art form for centuries, legitimized by the Impressionists in the late 19th century, and is known for the artist working outdoors, on-site to capture the world as it changes. This diverse group of artists use a variety of approaches and media: watercolor, oils, and acrylics. They are showcasing works that reflect a wide range of subject matter: some are attracted to industrial structures, while others look to a pastoral landscape, and most find inspiration in their local neighborhoods. All are attracted to scenes where the man-made intersects and interacts with nature. Buildings, bridges, the sky, trees, and water: all are things of beauty, whether at the Highline, Central Park or their own backyards.
Some artists in our group enjoy plein air painting as a way to find solace, while others gather energy from the places, movement, and life around them. Five of the artists have painted together and three in this group have been painting together since high school, creating a unique dialogue between artworks over time. Many of the artists have painted together on location, which provides an opportunity to view similar sites painted in different styles.
