I am very excited to announce that my painting, “Brooklyn’s Favorite (Cement Factory),” was selected to be in the popular group exhibit, the annual Small Works Show at 440 Gallery. This year’s curator, Grace R. Freedman , is Managing Director and co-Founder of Why Not Art?, an organization whose mission is to celebrate art and artists by building community support and connection for all.
440 Gallery is an artist-run space in Park Slope, Brooklyn, dedicated to the creation, exhibition and sale of a wide range of work. 440 Gallery also invites outside artists and curators to participate in seasonal group shows. Since 2005, the gallery has facilitated a lively cultural exchange within its Brooklyn neighborhood, and the artistic community at large.
All the artworks are no larger than 12” and might make wonderful holiday gifts!
Statement from 440 Gallery:
Creativity and innovation vie for space at 440 Gallery during the 19th Annual Small Works Show, a winter favorite of gallery followers and art collectors alike. Grace R. Freedman, Ph.D., our juror for this show, thoughtfully curated a collection of 83 works that were chosen from over 575 artists who submitted pieces as part of a national call-for-art this fall. Measuring no more than 12 inches in all dimensions, each artwork showcases the idea that size does indeed matter! Included in the exhibit are works of classic as well as non-traditional painting and sculpture, photography and digital works, and more than a few unexpected surprises.
Several awards will be presented to artists participating in the show, including the Jim Manwell Memorial Award, selected by the artist-members of the gallery; the People's Choice Award, voted on by the gallery's visitors; and the Juror's Choice Award, chosen by Freedman.
“My vision for this show was to select fine artwork that highlighted the many ways that artists approach a small-size format,” explains Freedman. “I was so excited to see the breadth of creativity in this year’s submissions. The artwork represented a wide range of diverse materials and styles – paintings (figurative and abstract), drawings, collage, textile work, sculpture and mixed media. While my job as juror was challenging, this makes for a very robust show of small works that are vibrant, interesting and affordable for art collectors.”
