Many summers ago, another artist and I rented this cottage on Block Island for a painting retreat. We had an enjoyable week of plein air painting. I took some photos of the interior, and later, back at the studio in Brooklyn, I used them as references to paint this large format painting. I spent a lot of time finding the right tones and values to capture the intricate play of light and shadows. At the time I was looking at Vermeer’s genius handling of light and, of course, Hopper’s compositions using doors or windows to bring the outdoors into interior scenes.
