I first painted a small plein air study, and then worked on this view in my studio. The stark white church with beautiful purple-blue shadows and large scale architectural details contrasts nicely with the low-rise brownstones. Flowering shrubs and a street tree add a touch of nature; it could almost be a small town scene. It is also a remarkable commentary on the gentrification and secularization of some Brooklyn neighborhoods. The church has been a co-op apartment building for quite awhile, and the former bodega has been a gourmet market, coffee shop, and catering company, and coffee shop again.
